If you are ready to trade a dead-end job for a career with a future, getting your name on the referral list is the most important move you can make. In Kansas City, the demand for skilled infrastructure workers is at an all-time high, and Laborers’ Local 663 is the gateway to the best projects in the region. Whether you are an experienced hand or a newcomer looking for construction jobs in Kansas City, our referral system ensures that the most qualified workers are matched with the city’s top contractors.
Step 1: Initial Contact and “Join Now”
The journey begins online or with a phone call. Your first step is to visit our website and fill out the “Join Now” form. This puts you on our radar and allows a union representative to reach out and discuss your background
- Action: Head to the official Join Now page.
- Why: This helps our leadership team understand if you should enter as an apprentice (learning the trade) or a journeyman (proven experience).
Step 2: Visit the Union Hall
Once you’ve made initial contact, you’ll need to visit one of our offices in person—either the Kansas City hall at 7820 Prospect or the Springfield location. This is where you officially sign the referral list and present your documentation.
Required Documents to Bring:
- Proof of education (High School Diploma or GED).
- Birth Certificate and Social Security Card.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- First month’s dues and/or initiation fee (depending on your status).
Step 3: Skill Assessment and Documentation
To ensure you receive the best labor union benefits and the correct pay scale, we need to verify what you know.
- For Journeymen: Bring proof of at least 4,000 hours of relevant construction experience (pay stubs, W-2s, or letters from previous employers).
- For Apprentices: You will complete an apprenticeship agreement. This commits you to 480 hours of classroom education at our Belton facility and 4,800 hours of on-the-job training.
Step 4: The Referral List and “Letter of Intent”
Once you are on the referral list, we work to match you with available positions. However, you can speed up the process by being proactive.
- Contractor List: We provide you with a list of signatory contractors.
- Sponsorship: If you find a contractor willing to hire you, they provide a Letter of Intent to Hire. Take this letter back to the hall, and you’ll be dispatched to work immediately.
Step 5: Stay Active and Ready
Being on the list is just the beginning. You must stay in contact with the hall to remain active. Once dispatched, you’ll start earning a union wage and building your pension from day one.
Why Contractors and Recruits Use the List
For contractors in KC, the referral list is a guarantee of quality. They know every name on that list belongs to a worker who is documented, drug-free, and backed by a 100-year legacy of excellence. For recruits, the list is your ticket to the middle class.
Don’t wait for the right time—make this your time.
